I bit my tongue and swallowed hard. I knew exactly who was on our ass, and it was the worst possible thing that could have happened.
“Jakkar?” I sighed. “We’ve got a problem.”
“What is it?” he asked gravely.
“We’ve picked up a tail.”
“A tail?”
“It’s Alice.”
“Shit.”
“Shit is right. Don’t suppose you’ve got a better idea than shooting her out of the sky?” I asked, some hope in my voice.
“At this point…” he said quietly, “it’s us or her, right?”
“Right.”
“Then I just hope you’re as good a shot as you think you are. Try not to kill her, all right?” He sounded genuine.
Neither of us liked the reality of this. But there really wasn’t any other choice.
I dragged the Samson over my shoulder and cocked it, checking the mag. I had about twenty rounds left. Without any other weapons I’d have to choose my shots carefully.
I shouldered it and waited, dismissing the warning signs in front of me and the thinning air as we climbed higher still, leaving the thin wisps of white cloud covering the land far below.
Alice was on us in a minute, the broad, winged shoulders of her Ariel Series mech taking shape with every gained meter.
“Lock on,” I commanded, watching Blue zero in and put a reticle over her, measuring her distance and speed with pinpoint accuracy. “Show potential evasive maneuvers based on Federation training.”
From Alice’s body, dotted, translucent lines arched away, to the left, right, above, and below, showing the paths she could take when I started shooting.
It would be the first time I’d shot at her. My finger felt stiff on the trigger.
Last time we’d crossed paths it was on a Federation space station more than a decade ago, and that was just a glorified laser-tag tournament. And even then I’d struggled to get it done.
I thought back to that day — to how it had ended. I’d chosen Alice over Greg and I’d lost him because of it. I remembered what that felt like, how that hurt. Made me sick. And now his life was hanging in the balance again.
He’d been there every step of the way and I’d gone to the bottom of a bottomless ocean to dredge him back into existence. I couldn’t throw that way. Not for this. Not for anything.
I took a breath and squeezed off a tight ring of fire, right at her.
She rolled left and then back over on herself, popping a few homing missiles that peeled off her shoulder and snaked toward me.
I needed to keep her at distance — for this reason.
Blue put targets on them and assisted my aim, picking the three out of the air with three well-placed shots twenty meters short of their mark.
They plumed into black clouds laced with flame and Alice burst through them, still in pursuit.
Her minigun spun up from its shoulder-mount and chugged off a line of fire.
It danced up the vaults and threatened to cut me in half.
I pulled backward, reaching for the line, and swung around it, narrowly avoiding the line of molten lead as it carved through the sky.
